Edge Device Maintenance and Automatic Updates

Edge Device Maintenance and Automatic Updates

Introduction

Big Network's Edge Devices (Edge Pro and Edge Lite) are cloud administered, orchestrated, and maintained. Edge Device's undergo a weekly maintenance window for automatic updates. Big Network requests that customers choose a suitable maintenance window for their local time zone and network conditions.

Managing Device Maintenance

You can review settings for device maintenance on the Edge Device Settings Page. From the Edge Devices listing, click "Configure" on the device in question.

In the "Maintenance" section of the page:
  1. If an update is currently available for your device, you can manually apply the update by clicking "Update Now."
    1. Clicking "Update Now" will cause the device to download a software update, validate the software update, apply the software update, and reboot.
  2. Select a day of the week and an hour of that day for Big Network to perform automated updates.
    1. Big Network will automatically deploy software updates on the day of week and hour specified.
NOTE: As an Edge Device reboots, its data path will be interrupted. It is important select a time window for automatic updates that will not impact network operations. Device reboots take 3-5 minutes to complete.

In Case of Update Failure

Big Network recognizes that there is always a chance that a software update will fail to apply, or that configuration incompatibilities may occur. Therefore, we have built-in mechanisms to test for network connectivity after upgrades, and if connectivity fails, Edge Devices will automatically rollback to the last known working software version. In the event of rollback, the device will be offline between 5-7 minutes.
